Watching Earth from orbit

The strongest scientific case may be looking back. Satellites measure sea level, ice extent, deforestation, sea surface temperature, and atmospheric — global, continuous, consistent records no ground station network could produce. Nearly every indicator in Indicators of Climate Change depends on them.

The argument to weigh

Space programs cost billions that could be spent on immediate needs. The counter-argument is that some knowledge and some technologies can only be obtained this way. Both positions are serious — which is what makes Space Mission Proposal worth doing carefully.
