The idea
Producers convert light energy into chemical energy stored in sugar. That is the doorway through which nearly all energy on Earth enters living systems.
In words: carbon dioxide and water, given light, become glucose and oxygen.

A common misconception
Plants do not βeat soilβ. Almost all of the mass of a tree came out of the air. Weigh a seed, weigh the tree it becomes, and the difference is mostly carbon that arrived as an invisible gas.
Why it matters beyond biology
Every fossil fuel we burn is ancient photosynthesis. The carbon in gasoline was pulled out of the atmosphere by living things and buried. Burning it puts that carbon back β see The Carbon Cycle and Indicators of Climate Change.
